Problems with periorbital structures

Tendon and bursa issues are among the most common musculoskeletal problems affecting mobility, functionality, and quality of life. Tendons connect muscles to bones and are crucial for the transmission of forces between them, while bursas act as cushions that reduce friction between tendons, muscles, and bones. When these structures are damaged or overloaded, inflammation, pain, and movement limitations occur, which can affect the ability to perform daily tasks or athletic activities.

Most common issues

Patellar tendinopathy (patellar tendinitis): A type of tendinopathy, also known as “jumper's knee,” occurs due to overuse of the patellar tendon, particularly in athletes involved in jumping, running, or soccer. Patellar tendinopathy causes inflammation, pain, and stiffness in the lower part of the knee, which can limit movement and athletic performance.
IT Band Syndrome (Iliotibial Band Syndrome): The IT band is a long tendon that runs along the outside of the thigh and helps stabilize the knee. IT Band Syndrome is caused by overuse of the tendon, which causes pain on the outside of the knee or hips, especially in runners and cyclists. It is a friction syndrome where the tendon rubs over the bone, leading to inflammation.

Achilles tendinopathy: The Achilles tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the body, but it is very susceptible to overuse injuries, especially in runners and athletes who perform jumps. Overuse causes micro-injuries and inflammation, leading to pain above the heel, swelling, and stiffness, especially in the morning or after physical activity.
Plantar fasciitis: Although it is an inflammation of the fascia on the sole of the foot, plantar fasciitis shares similar characteristics with tendinopathies. It occurs due to overload of the plantar fascia, causing pain in the lower part of the foot, especially in the heel area. This problem is common in runners or those who spend a lot of time standing.
Supraspinatus tendinopathy: The supraspinatus is a rotator cuff muscle that is frequently prone to injury due to repetitive overhead movements. Injury to the supraspinatus tendon causes pain in the upper part of the shoulder, which limits mobility and the ability to raise the arm overhead. This condition is common in athletes such as volleyball and tennis players.
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is inflammation of the tendons on the outside of the elbow caused by overuse of the wrist extensors. It results from repetitive movements typical of sports such as tennis, as well as other activities that require gripping or lifting. Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis) affects the tendons on the inside of the elbow where the wrist flexor muscles attach. This type of tendinopathy is typical of activities requiring a strong grip. Both conditions cause pain and weakness in the elbow, wrist, and forearm, which limits movement.
Trochanteric bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa in the hip, causing pain on the outer side of the hip. It often occurs in people who walk, run, or stand a lot on hard surfaces, as well as people with improper gait biomechanics. In addition to bursa inflammation, gluteal tendinopathy also frequently occurs, which further increases pain and limits movement.

Causes and risk factors

  • Long-term tendon overload due to repetitive movements, jumping, or running causes microtrauma and inflammation, leading to chronic issues.
  • Improper joint movement and the influence of posture increase the load on tendons and bursae, leading to injury.
  • Too much, too fast, and too little rest is a risk for injuries.
